Digital advertising screens set to be installed at York station

Digital screens could be set to replace print adverts at York Station under new plans.

Plans from Bauer Media Outdoor and LNER would see three screens installed in the portico at the front entrance to the station following the removal of 18 poster displays.

The application stated the new screens would display real-time updates for passengers, messages from local authorities and adverts bringing in extra revenue to help fund the running of the station.

Plans lodged with City of York Council would see screens installed by the pedestrian entrances on either side of the portico.

A third would be fitted next to the door to the station’s entrance hall.

The 18 print screen displays currently on the inside walls of the portico would be taken down.

Each of the LCD screens would be around 1.6m-high and 0.9m-wide and would be able to display council and public health information and emergency incident messages, along with adverts.

They have also been used for campaigns from charities and other non-profit organisations elsewhere.

Adverts would change every 10 seconds and the screens would feature automated luminance controls which change in line with ambient light levels.

The screens are made by Finnish firm Symbicon Ltd and come from its IconOne range. They are tested in Finland in extreme weather to ensure they can cope with different conditions.

Plans stated: “Each site has been considered in line with supporting development in a sympathetic way, reflecting the current and ongoing use of the station building as a 21st century transport hub.”
