York council is to close St George’s car park from tonight due to rising river levels.
It follows the heavy rainfall over the last few days, increasing water flow in the River Ouse and its tributaries.
The Ouse in York city centre could rise to as high as 3.95 metres in the early hours of Wednesday, according to a forecast from the Viking Recorder.
The top of the normal range is 1.9m.
As a result the often-flooded St George’s car park will close at 8pm and stay shut tomorrow (Tuesday, 2 December).
Rowntree Park will also close tomorrow.
While most of the city is open for business, City of York Council has issued this advice:
- Do not drive through flood water
- Avoid riverside footpaths along the Ouse and Foss that are submerged.
There’s already a flood warning in place – meaning flooding is expected – for the River Derwent at Stamford Bridge.
And there are flood alerts (flooding is possible) for the Upper River Ouse, Upper River Derwent and Lower River Derwent.
