A new Easter trail has launched at Castle Howard – that celebrates Yorkshire bird life.
The North Yorkshire stately home has collaborated with York artist Gerard Hobson on a new Easter trail designed for families.
The trail is a springtime adventure featuring 13 handmade bird boxes, which have been installed across Castle Howard Gardens and at the Arboretum from Saturday 28 March to Sunday 19 April.

Gerard Hobson, an artist and printmaker specialising in linocuts of wildlife, flora and fauna, has designed and made the trail, including creating 13 wooden birdboxes. The boxes house linocuts of birds, including swallow, magpie, woodpecker, wren and more, as part of a story designed for children as they all prepare for Spring.
Gerard Hobson said: “Creating this trail has been a wonderful opportunity to showcase the varied wildlife that visits our gardens, both at home and in the Castle Howard Estate. Young explorers will discover interesting facts about our feathered friends and learn more about their homes along the way.”
All those who complete the trail, answering the questions posed to them by Owl and his friends will be rewarded with a chocolate prize at the finish, supplied by Autism Plus in Knaresborough.

Abbi Ollive, Castle Howard’s visitor attraction director, said: “Easter is always a special time to visit the Estate and this year’s trail is a wonderful way for families to explore the gardens and learn about nature together.
“Gerard is known for his bold hand-coloured lino prints inspired by British wildlife and we are delighted to partner with him as he transforms his beautiful style into a playful, outdoor installation. We’re thrilled that the trail extends across both Castle Howard and the Arboretum, so families can continue the adventure.”
The Easter Family Trail is included Castle Howard and Arboretum day tickets. Find out more about how Castle Howard are celebrating Easter at their website here.
