Filming of period drama closes parts of Castle Howard

A historic North Yorkshire attraction is set to once again be a backdrop on film.

Castle Howard has been the setting for many a historical TV show or film, including Bridgerton, Brideshead Revisited, Victoria, and Death Comes to Pemberley, to name just a few.

Now, another one will soon be added to the roster, as the historic house is currently hosting a film crew for a period drama film.

A notice on the Castle Howard website currently reads, “Areas of Castle Howard are closed for filming.

“You might notice the odd horse, cart or formally-clad actor in the next few days, as some parts of Castle Howard host a film crew.

“This will affect some areas of the site between 6th – 19th May.”

More details on the period drama film are as of yet unknown, but it’s exciting to know that the beautiful North Yorkshire house will be seen again on our screens.

Between 12 to 15 May, the House, Fitzroy Café, gift shop and Boathouse will be closed and the the Kelly Car will not be running. The Courtyard Café will be closed from 12pm from Thursday 14 May, and all day Friday 15 May.

The Gardens and Playground are open as usual, as well as the Castle Howard Arboretum, where the café and shop are open.

Castle Howard has played a starring role in the smash-hit series Bridgerton.

Inspired by Julia Quinn’s bestselling novels, the Netflix original series was part filmed at Castle Howard in 2019 when the house doubled as the Duke of Hasting’s country home, Clyvedon Castle.

The regency romance has started filming for its fifth series.

Brideshead Revisited (2008)

The Castle Howard house may also be familiar to television and film audiences as the fictional ‘Brideshead’, and believed to have inspired the setting for Evelyn Waugh’s iconic novel Brideshead Revisited.

The TV drama in 1981 ‘catapulted’ Castle Howard into the public eye, and the historic house reprised its role as the Marchmain’s family home in 2008 when Miramax returned to Yorkshire to shoot the feature film adaptation starring Matthew Goode, Hayley Atwell, and Ben Whishaw.

Today, there’s plenty to see and do at the beloved attraction. Castle Howard is currently marking the 300th anniversary of its architect’s death, Sir John Vanbrugh, with the exhibition Staging the Baroque: Vanbrugh at Castle Howard.

Special events for May half term are coming soon too with Mini Beasts and Playshapes: Castle Constructors. Find out more and book your visit at the Castle Howard website.
