Updated: York bomb alert comes to a safe end as neighbours allowed back to their homes

The bomb squad were called out this evening (Wednesday) after a suspect item was discovered in York.

Police cordoned off a 50m area around a house on Howe Hill Road, Holgate after builders “unearthed a metal item in York which could have been there since the Second World War”.

Police added: “We were alerted to the house undergoing renovations on Howe Hill Road, Holgate, at 4.40pm today.

“Nearby properties and allotments have been evacuated as a precaution awaiting the arrival of the Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal team.”

Firefighters and paramedics were also called to the scene.

Then, just before 7pm, the all-clear was sounded.

Police said: “The Army EOD team have examined the item and confirmed it does not pose a danger.

“It has been removed and the neighbours have been allowed back in their homes.”
