We’ve long welcomed visitors and students from the United States of America.
Now it turns out that many Americans have chosen to stay in the city.
And even more have bought property in the rest of North Yorkshire.
New research by The Times newspaper shows how many homes in England are owned by US citizens.
In York there are 57 homes with US-registered owners. In total this property is worth an estimated £17,474,547 making each home worth an average £306,571.
Across North Yorkshire, 180 homes are American owned, worth £48,979,980, averaging £272,111 per property.
By comparison, Leeds has 78 such homes with a total value of £19.2m, or £246K per property.
The Times report suggests that the real figure of US-owned property could be higher still, with some wealthy American owners registering UK properties to trusts or offshore companies in other countries.
Meanwhile, the push goes on to attract more US visitors to York. Last year Make It York said the US was one of its target markets for inbound tourists.
In a survey of 1,006 visitors to York in 2024-5, 66 respondents said they came from the US, the highest amount of those from outside the UK.
