A community picnic in York will combine food and grassroots funding.
Organised by York Together, STEW will take place at Rowntree Park on Saturday 27 June, and aims to bring together those who care about the people and planet.
Set in the park’s amphitheatre space, this is a ‘pay what you can’ ticketed event, and guests are encouraged to bring a picnic blanket and enjoy this laid-back, inclusive approach to local change-making.
Attendees will receive an Arabic salad bowl, soft drink, and baklava, which is included for each ticket holder. They will then hear from three local community organisers who will each have four minutes to pitch their grassroots project or idea.
Following the pitches, the audience will then vote on which project should receive the majority of the event’s prize pot, which is funded entirely through ticket sales.
This event aims to give local people the chance to decide how money is spent. It’s also an opportunity to make new connections and hear about important work happening to make York a more fair, just and sustainable city.
Anjelica Finnegan, development lead, said: “This is the third STEW event of its kind, but the first community picnic we’ve attempted. We’re excited to give this type of grassroots fundraising a go in the great outdoors, with the beautiful Rowntree Park as our backdrop.
“It’s rare to find a space where people come together like this: to eat, to listen, and to collectively decide what kind of future they want for their city – so we’re hoping people will come along and enjoy!”
