Liberal Democrat councillors have criticised the Labour-run City of York Council’s decision to raise parking charges over the Christmas period, branding it a “Christmas cash grab” at, they claim, the expense of local residents and businesses.
The decision came after public feedback during last year’s budget consultation which showed that 62% supported increases for major events in the city.
Under the changes, parking charges between Sunday and Thursday will be increased to match the higher weekend rates for the duration of the Christmas Market (13 November-21 December).
The move, the Council claims, will help balance the budget but a Lib Dem councillors warn it risks driving shoppers away from York’s high streets at the very time businesses rely on festive footfall to make much of their yearly profit.

Cllr Ashley Mason, Liberal Democrat spokesperson for the Economy, said:
“This Christmas cash grab is the wrong move at the wrong time. At a period when most city centre businesses make the bulk of their annual profit, Labour are putting up barriers that will simply turn people away.
“The Council should be supporting local traders, not using Christmas as an excuse to raise more money. If they genuinely need the extra income, it should be ringfenced to fund a permanent cheaper 30-minute parking option for residents who just want to pop into town to support their local shops year round.”
Councillor Kate Ravilious, Executive Member for Transport said: “All income generated from parking goes back into transport in the city. We are spending more than ever before on highways maintenance and are also investing in our bus network and in walking and cycling routes to help residents and visitors to travel sustainably.
“Residents will still be able to use their Minster Badge for discounted parking rates and there are a number of other ways people can visit and travel around York this Christmas.
“Extra Park & Ride buses are running with free travel for up to three children with a paying adult. A family of five can also travel around the city on any bus for £9.60 with an all York pass.”
