£32m Selby improvement scheme set to begin

A £32 million improvement scheme for Selby is about to get underway.

It centres on the town’s railway station.

Demolition work at James William House on Cowie Drive behind the station will begin at the end this month.

This will be followed by the former Railway Social Club and Selby Business Centre on Station Road.

The first phase of the scheme, which will be carried out over the next 12 months, will also see a new car park built at the station and all-user platform access to the rear of the building.

There will be an improved and remodelled bus station, and improvements to footpaths and cycleways.

The Transforming Cities Fund project aims to encourage the use of sustainable transport through delivering improved access, walking and cycling routes to the station.

North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for highways and transport, Cllr Malcolm Taylor, said: “I’m pleased to announce that after many months of development, and through close working with partners and the community, we are ready to begin the scheme.

“It represents a major investment to enhance the area and improve routes leading to the railway station, and we are confident that the project will act as a catalyst for further investment for Selby.

“We will keep the public updated when details of further phases come forward.”

The £32m scheme is funded by the Department for Transport, North Yorkshire Council, York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority and Active Travel England.
