Works worth £165,000 to improve a York junction said to be in the worst condition of any maintained by the council have been approved.
City of York Council officers have approved refurbishments at the junction of Fossbank, Foss Island Road, Layerthorpe and Peasholme Green, with works set to start next year.
A council report on the decision stated the insfrastructure at the junction is 27 years old.
It comes as part of a project which began in 2022.
Options for the refurbishment previously included creating space in the existing road way for active travel.
The council report stated the proposals had been shelved following modelling due to potential effects on the city’s goals as part of its wider Transport Strategy.
Works due to take place early next year include the replacement of traffic controllers, signal heads, detection cameras, poles and cabling.
Lights are also set to be converted to ELV and LED, with existing ducting work set to be reused and new traffic signal power sockets installed.
Existing fibre communications links and power supplies are set to be reused.
The council report stated the works would keep equipment at the junction operating and reduce the risk of failure.
The report stated: “The junction is currently the worst condition traffic signal site amongst council assets.
“The project is currently intended for delivery in early 2026.”
