York shop to close – but ‘we’re not scaling back, we’re moving forward’

A York shop is to close this month – but the business is “moving forward”.

Popular plant emporium Botanic has to leave its home on Walmgate because the building has been sold.

“But don’t panic, we are absolutely not going anywhere! Honestly, there’s so much to look forward to and we couldn’t be more ready for it,” the business posted on Instagram.

“Botanic York is very much alive and this change feels right and if we’re honest, the building being sold helped make the decision a little clearer.

“The restrictions of the space have been something we’ve navigated for a while, and this felt like the natural moment to take the leap.”

Established in 2018, Botanic is fondly referred to locally as York’s ‘urban jungle’. It was bought in 2023 by Abbi Dixon, and only a year later, the shop was selected to exhibit at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

Botanic’s mission is set out on its website: “Our passion for plants stems from our belief that there is a plant for everyone, an inner green just waiting to be discovered.”

The business is “in talks about some exciting new retail spots” and in the meantime can be found at The Balloon Tree in Gate Helmsley and Field House Coffee Barn in Driffield. And it remains online of course.

“Online, plant styling, workshops, plants for your business, event or office and all the advice that comes with it, all of it is continuing and growing. We’re not scaling back, we’re moving forward,” Botanic York says.

“The shop on Walmgate has been such a special place. The chats, the plant advice, the people who’ve popped in week after week and become so much more than customers – you’ve made it something really beautiful, and we’re carrying all of that with us as we step into this exciting new chapter.

“So this isn’t a goodbye. Not even close.”
