York MP Rachael Maskell is back in the Labour Party

York MP Rachael Maskell is back in the Parliamentary Labour Party.

She was one of four MPs who were suspended by Prime Minister Keir Starmer for repeatedly rebelling against the government.

They have all now had the whip restored.

Ms Maskell was widely seen as the ringleader in the successful rebellion against the goverment’s welfare reforms. She was suspended in July.

Rachael Maskell will no longer sit as an independent in the Commons following a review of their recent conduct, Labour sources said.

Neither will three other MPs: Neil Duncan-Jordan, Chris Hinchliff and Brian Leishman.

When she was suspended, the York Central MP said she it was for “standing up for my constituents” over the benefits plans.

Tonight Ms Maskell issued this statement: “I am grateful that the whip has rightfully been restored and want to especially thank all those who have been so kind to me over the last few months.

“I am Labour to the core and will always stand up for Labour values, to be a voice for those in need and to seek justice at every opportunity. I will continue to work hard for my constituents in York as their Labour and Co-operative MP.

“I recognise the heavy responsibility on Labour to repair our public services and economy after 14 disastrous years and above all to lift people out of poverty. With 4.5m children living in poverty tonight, I am focused on ensuring they have the very best start in life.”

Her colleague Luke Charters, Labour MP for York Outer, welcomed the news.

He said: “Labour is delivering in York – through our MPs, our council and our Mayor. From funding vital flood defences in Fulford, to delivering the new station in Haxby, to tackling antisocial behaviour, I’m focused on getting results for our city alongside my colleagues.

“The biggest political threat to York is Reform. They have no plan for our community and seek only to divide. Only Labour can stop them.

“Now more than ever, we need unity. I have always believed Rachael is a hardworking MP, and I look forward to continuing to work with her in the years ahead.”
