York bar goes up for sale after sudden closure

A bar that shut suddenly to the dismay of locals is now up for sale.

As YorkMix reported, The Hand, on York Road in Acomb, closed earlier this month.

There was no explanation given, just the word ‘Closed’ on the website and social channels.

Now, though, the owners of The Hand have put it up for sale as a going concern.

“Business for sale, an opportunity to purchase a turnkey business in the heart of Acomb,” a post says on its website.

“A thriving local bar which has received overwhelmingly positive reviews, hosted Michelin starred chefs for pop-up food events, and has a loyal local customer base.”

Included in the sale are fixtures and fittings, such as fridges, an oven, a sink, chairs, tables, bars stools, wine glasses, miscellaneous bar equipment and a laptop.

The website, Instagram channel, mailing list and “Google Maps profile with 4.6 rating” are also included in the sale.

The details state: “A new lease will need to be negotiated with the landlord, which will be subject to legal fees.

“To register interest, please send proof of funds available to purchase. We can then provide you with more details such as turnover, monthly overheads and other information. Best and final offers to be submitted by 24th October.”

Anyone can register their interest via [email protected].

The Hand began as a collaboration between husband and wife team Ashley and Matthew Hyde and their business partner Greg Harper.

They originally planned to open a bar called the Ham & Firkin in the former Lloyds Bank building on Front Street, Acomb.

But they withdrew that planning application in favour of the one to create The Hand at 55 York Road.

Many expressed their sadness after its closure. One regular said: “It’s a real shame if it really has closed, we really liked it there and it was a great addition to Front Street.”
