A man who was left in a coma after a riverside attack has died, police confirmed today.
Chris Baker, who was 58, was seriously injured after being set upon by two men and a woman as he sat by the River Ouse in York.
It happened at around 2pm on Bank Holiday Monday, 25 August.
Where it happened
Following what police described as a “serious assault” as he sat on a bench near Scarborough Bridge, Mr Baker was put in an induced coma.
He suffered serious facial injuries and at one point doctors feared he would lose his eye.
A friend said all his friends and family were “disgusted, shocked and upset” by the attack on a vulnerable man. He was also robbed of all his money.
Mr Baker came out of his coma successfully, but has now passed away.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “The man in his 50s, who was assaulted while sitting on a bench near Scarborough Bridge, has sadly died.
“A postmortem examination has confirmed that the man died from natural causes. His death is not being treated as connected to the earlier assault.
“A 39-year-old man and a 45-year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of robbery. Both have been released on bail while further enquiries continue.
“The investigation remains ongoing, and we are still appealing for any information that may assist.”
