York and North Yorkshire firms pocket export grants – aiming for £45m in sales

Thirty businesses from across York and North Yorkshire are set to go global – with grants from the regional mayor helping fund trade missions to North America, Europe and Asia.

The second round of the combined authority’s Get Exporting programme has been announced, with companies sharing grants of between £3,000 and £10,000 to help break into new international markets.

It follows a first round that backed 40 businesses, meaning the full grant pot has now been allocated. Based on returns seen in a pilot scheme, the combined £635,000 investment is projected to unlock more than £45 million in new sales around the world.

Mayor David Skaith said: “We’ve seen what our incredible local businesses can achieve when they have the right support. By tripling our exports grant pot, we’re backing ambition and unlocking more in new global trade.”

Among the York-area winners is Simpson Associates, with chief marketing officer Emma McGhin saying the funding has “helped accelerate” the company’s move into international markets with its data and AI solutions.

York Glassware, Made Super, SkillsForge, Cyclops Electronics, Nomada Digital and The Potions Cauldron are among the other York-based firms to benefit.

Malton’s The Tofoo Company – one of the region’s best-known food brands – will use its £10,000 to push into the German market. Director David Knibbs said the grant will help grow the team and “further strengthen Malton’s reputation as Yorkshire’s award-winning Food Town.”

Thirsk-based manufacturer Resimac Limited will head to Thailand to exhibit at Trenchless Asia, a major industry event, using the grant to build new partnerships in a market where the company currently has limited presence.

The Get Exporting scheme is part of the wider Business Innovation Fund run by the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority. Other programmes in the fund – including Great Ideas and Get Funded – are still to launch in the coming months.

A previous pilot invested £200,000 and generated more than £15 million in sales, a 75:1 return that formed the basis for the £45 million projection.
