A couple from the USA who have spent months exploring Britain have released their top ten places to visit – and York comes in at number one.
Cara Atwell and Jeremy Davis, who hail from Portland in Oregon, run the Magic Geekdom YouTube channel chronicling all their travels.
After eight months discovering all things British, they returned home to reveal their top ten places to visit, and our own city is at number one.
They didn’t include London, as they assumed all tourists would visit the capital. Included in their ten favourites were Edinburgh, Lincoln, Newcastle, Manchester and Bath.
The Lake District came in at number two.
Then… “The number one place to visit on our list has to be York,” Jeremy reveals.
“On our first trip, it was probably the single place that made us fall in love with England. There’s no place quite like York.
“It’s a city that has a perfect blend of history and charm and feels so quintessentially English.”
They were “awestruck” by York Minster and said Shambles is “one of the coolest looking streets in England”. “We loved browsing the quirky, independent shops like the Ghost Merchants of York, known for its handmade ghost trinkets.”
They enjoyed York’s pub culture too, Cara adds, “from trying classic pub dishes at Ye Olde Star Inn, which was established in 1644 to meeting locals at the Snickleway Inn, a great pub with quirky decor and 80s punk rock vibes”.
Among their favourite places to eat were loved Bettys (of course) and the York Roast Company.
Jeremy adds: “Why I know York is one of the best places to visit is because every time we go, we just want to put the camera down and immerse ourselves in the vibes and atmosphere.
“It’s the kind of city I just want to wander and get lost in.”
