A speeding driver who sparked a chase through Selby was finally brought to book by a rookie police dog.
Officers set off in pursuit of a Fiat 500 after it passed them at speed on the outskirts of the town at 12.47am on Tuesday 23 September.
The chase sound reached speeds of more than 80mph before the Fiat was brought to a halt as police deployed a stinger to deflate its tyres.
A minute later the 49-year-old suspect, who had made off from the vehicle on foot, was arrested after police dog Enzo was deployed by his handler.
This was Enzo’s first ‘bite’ on the job since being trained. The driver went to hospital for treatment for the dog bite on his thigh.
He was then questioned in custody for dangerous driving and failing to stop for the police offences.
Yesterday (Thursday), Matthew James Armitage, of Ebor Court, Selby, appeared at York Magistrates’ Court where he pleaded guilty to the two offences.
He was handed a community order, a fine and court costs totalling £279, and banned from driving for 12 months. He must complete an extended driving test before being allowed back on the roads.
When interviewed by police said he failed to stop as he thought his car insurance had run out. In fact, the policy was still in place.
Traffic Constable Davey Mitchell, who led the pursuit, said: “He admitted he had made a big mistake and reacted badly when he saw the police car.
“Either way, if you drive dangerously on the roads at any time of day or night, we will do everything we can to bring you to justice.”
TC Mitchell added: “We are thrilled for PD Enzo who put all his training into practice for the very first time. His handler is also absolutely delighted with him – the body worn camera footage of the arrest says it all, really!”
