Warning after youths threw trolley at swans in York

Two swans nesting in a York suburb are being disturbed by anti-social behaviour.

The birds are found on the estate pond in Derewenthorpe.

Youths have thrown a trolley at the pair, and a lifebuoy ring, says the Yorkshire Swan & Wildlife Rescue Hospital.

Swans and their nests are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, making it a criminal offence to injure, kill, or interfere with them.

It is a particularly sensitive time of the year as the birds typically lay eggs between March and April.

Police visited the site today (Thursday) and the swans were both uninjured.

In a message to residents, PC Dave Ellison said: “In response to recent reports, officers will be conducting regular patrols in the area and will deal robustly with any offences identified.

“We ask all residents to be respectful when passing the nesting site. Please ensure children are also supervised and understand the importance of not disturbing the swans.

“Although usually calm, swans can become highly territorial during nesting season (April–June) and may react defensively if approached.

“We also encourage residents to stay vigilant and report any anti‑social or criminal behaviour to the police.”
