Storm Lilian latest: Fallen trees, train delays, power cuts

The worst of Storm Lilian is apparently over, but it has left a trail of disruption across York and North Yorkshire.

There have been problems on both the roads and the railways, and widespread power cuts.

A fallen tree on the A64 caused disruption for drivers in York in this morning’s rush hour.

It was on the westbound lane between the junctions with the A19 and the A1036. It has now been removed and the road is back to normal.

Meanwhile, there was a crash on the A1041 at Camblesforth near Selby, reportedly involving multiple vehicles. Traffic is back up and running there now.

There are reports of tree debris causing problems on other roads in our region, so the advice is to drive extra carefully.

At least two trees have come down in Selby Cemetery. It is closed today. Another fell in Millgate in the town.

A tree has also gone at Bishopthorpe near the solar system cycle track. Riders can still get through, we’re told.

Trains and buses

On the railways, several lines have been disrupted.

Earlier, an object caught on the overhead electric wires between Doncaster and York meant the East Coast Main Line was blocked between these stations.

That problem has been sorted. But  speed restrictions are in place for safety reasons between Doncaster and York, delaying journeys

Rail company Northern said on X: “Due to severe weather disrupting the railway customers are advised DO NOT TRAVEL at this time.”

It says some lines are blocked. “Train services running across the whole Northern network will be cancelled, delayed or revised.”

You can find out more on Northern’s journey alerts page.

TransPennine Express services are disrupted, including between Leeds and York.

And Grand Central Rail said on X: “Due to multiple trees blocking various parts of the railway, our Bradford to London Kings Cross services are currently suspended until further notice.

“Further details will be posted below once known. However, it may be recommended to delay your journey plans for now.”

All the latest is on the National Rail page here.

East Yorkshire Buses say: “Due to high winds from Storm Lilian, we are seeing delays on the York–Hull corridor.”

It is updating passengers on this page here.

Power cuts

There have been multiple power cuts in North Yorkshire.

Homes and businesses have been blacked out between York and Tadcaster, west of Selby and east of Malton.

Northern Powergrid said: “Storm Lilian has started to have an impact on the North East and Yorkshire regions, bringing strong winds since 5am. We are experiencing disruption to power supplies with over 63,000 customers having been affected so far.

“We know how difficult it can be during a power cut, and our teams are working to get power back on and fix the issues caused as quickly as possible. We have already made good progress, managing to reconnect 27,000 customers.

“Our teams have been sent to the worst affected areas to begin reconnecting customers.

“The forecasts suggest we may continue to feel the impact of the storm throughout today as it passes across the region.

“We are working around the clock, 24 hours a day, to assess any damage being caused, answer customer calls, deploy additional support vehicles and have prepared further resources to deploy to the areas we anticipate could be affected.”

You can report power cuts online here.

Attractions and events

The high winds are having an impact on events and attractions in Yorkshire.

This is the latest from Leeds Festival which starts at Bramham Park today: “We can see an end in sight to the high winds.

“We definitely won’t be opening the arena at 11am, but we are targeting as soon as possible after that and we will update you further.

“However, we have definitely lost the BBC Radio 1 stage today, and there will be no performances on it. We have also lost the Aux stage today, and there will be no performances on it.

“We remain hopeful that everything else will continue as planned and that we will still have an amazing weekend. Please await further information.”

And York Maze is open – but they may delay the opening of certain attractions on site, such as the inflatable obstacle course, until the winds die down.
