Updated: A1M reopens after serious crash

A serious crash has left a stretch of the A1M closed for several hours today (Saturday).

The southbound carriageway of the motorway near Catterick – between junctions 52 and 51 – was shut while police investigated a serious collision between a car and a lorry.

It happened at around 2.20am. It is believed the car had been travelling behind the lorry and it ended up in the central reservation.

Crash location

The man driving the car has been taken to hospital with serious injuries. The lorry driver is uninjured.

The road has now reopened.

Earlier, traffic was being diverted via the A6055.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “The closure is expected to remain in place until the early afternoon while both vehicles are recovered and debris cleared from the road.

“Motorists are urged to be patient and to avoid the route if possible until further notice.”

Witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage of the collision are asked to email
