Rents in York soar by 13% – a faster rise than London

Latest figures show how fast rents in York are soaring.

The latest data from the Office for National Statistics show that the average rent in the city hit £1,096 in April – which is 13% up on the year before.

And York’s average rent is up 25% in the five years since April 2019 when it was £881.

That puts York’s average rent higher than Leeds (£1,087 – a 7.7% annual increase) and way ahead of Sheffield (£833 – 10.1%).

While rents are much higher in London, they have only risen by 10.8% in the year to April.

The average rent for a home in England is £1,293 a month.

In North Yorkshire, the average rent has risen by 5.4% year on year to £771 in April.

York’s average rent went above £1K a month for the first time last May. At the time, the City of York Council leader Claire Douglas said: “We’ve committed to extending licensing of landlords and doing what we can to make sure Airbnbs and short term holiday lets aren’t as prolific in the city as they currently are, because really in some areas they are quite dominant.”

But she said it would require national legislation.
