There is serious disruption on the East Coast Main Line today (Friday) after it shut last night due to trespassers on the line.
The railway had to shut between Newark North Gate and Retford. British Transport Police worked into the early hours to get the person involved to safety.
A broken down train at Stevenage also added to the problems.
Many passengers were stuck on crowded services for over five hours and took to social media to complain that there was very limited food and drink available.
Today LNER issued this update: “There is disruption across our route today between London King’s Cross and Edinburgh, due to a trespasser on the railway earlier today.
“Due to the displacement of trains sets and crew, we are having to cancel or alter services for today. Disruption is expected to last until the end of the day.
“Train services are likely to be busy and may be subject to alteration and / or cancellation.
“If your LNER train has been cancelled, you will be able to use your existing ticket on another LNER service. Please make a new seat reservation.”
This affects LNER at York, Hull Trains at Selby and also Grand Central at Thirsk and Northallerton.

Thursday night nightmare
Rail replacement coaches were running between Doncaster and York last night (Thursday). Some trains were able to travel via Lincoln to avoid Newark too.
Travellers took to social media to vent their anger. “My daughter was stuck for 8 hrs on a train with no food and very little drink options. Supposed to arrive in York at 8pm arrived at 5.35am if you could have told people the length of the delay I’d have picked her up myself. Disgraceful,” one parent wrote on X.
Another wrote: “Absolutely outrageous if I’m honest, now at York Station and there’s 300 people waiting for a taxi when there’s only two coming at a time and no Ubers.”
Managing Director of LNER David Horne took to X to apologise:
