Nature march and family-friendly picnic to take place in York

Extinction Rebellion York will march from St Helen’s Square to Millennium Bridge – to celebrate local wildlife on Sunday 21 July at 1:30pm.

The march will draw attention to biodiversity loss and demand that the council restore nature in York.

It will be a creative celebration of York’s beautiful and unique flora and fauna, such as York groundsel and the tansy beetle, as well an urgent call to action in the face of catastrophic wildlife loss across the nation and globally.

Marchers will wear costumes or carry props relating to different species, and the action will end with a family-friendly picnic at Millennium Fields.

Environmental groups from across York and the surrounding area, such as Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace and the Yorkshire Rewilding Network, have been invited to take part. Residents of all ages are encouraged to attend and stand up for our non-human neighbours in the city.

The march is a local follow-on from last month’s Restore Nature Now march in London. This was the biggest protest for nature in history, in which 100,000 people joined XR, the National Trust, RSPB, Wildlife Trusts, Chris Packham, other celebrities and many more campaign and charity groups in calling for greater nature protection and restoration from the government.

Restore Nature York is making similar demands, calling for more funding for nature-friendly farming, cleanup fines for polluters, the expansion and improvement of protected areas and public land, the right to a healthy environment (in the form of clean air and water and equitable access to land) being enshrined in law.
