The Mayor of Malton has praised emergency services and residents for their ‘outstanding teamwork’ in the midst of yesterday’s devastating blaze.
Cllr Jason Aldrich visited all the key sites during and after the fire which gutted the Springwood unit at Malton Hospital.
“Thanks to the swift and professional actions of our emergency services and hospital staff, no one was seriously injured,” he said in a message today (Thursday).

“A temporary ward was rapidly established at Malton Hospital, with a rest centre for staff set up at the Milton Rooms to support the ongoing response.
“I visited all affected sites throughout the day and was overwhelmed by the outstanding teamwork and compassion shown across our community.
“Alongside trained professionals, Malton’s residents stepped forward without hesitation; directing traffic, helping transport patients safely to Malton School, and offering practical support wherever it was needed.
“Local businesses also provided food and drink to tired volunteers, demonstrating once again the strength of Malton’s community spirit.”
The mayor met with patients being cared for in a makeshift ward at Malton School.
“Although understandably shaken, they were in good spirits and deeply appreciative of the care and kindness shown to them.
“I want to express my sincere thanks to our emergency services, hospital staff, Malton School, local businesses, and every member of the public who went out of their way to help on what was a terrible day for our town.
“Your kindness, calmness, and willingness to act will be a lasting memory for all involved.
“A heartfelt thank you to everyone who played a part in keeping our community safe.”
