Three people have been arrested and a machete seized by police after a van chase in York early today (Wednesday)
The incident began when a special constable from the Roads Policing Group spotted a suspicious vehicle on the outskirts of the city in the early hours.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “It was believed to be linked to a two-in-one burglary – when thieves break into a house to steal car keys and the vehicle – and we’d been looking for it.
“We tried to pull it over near Osbaldwick but the vehicle failed to stop.”
A pursuit began and the police helicopter was called in. The chase came to an end when police deployed the stinger, a device thrown across the road to puncture a vehicle’s tyres.
The people in the van fled the scene. After a police search, three men were detained.
The men, aged 18 to 24 and from Hull and Bradford, were arrested on suspicion of multiple offences including burglary, theft of a motor vehicle and failing to stop for police.
The force spokesperson said: “A machete, hammers an angle grinder and other items often used in burglaries were found during a search of the van.
“We also recovered a large amount of cash which was seized.
“The suspects have been taken into custody and enquiries are ongoing.”
