Loft in Harrogate flat destroyed by fire

A fire badly damaged a flat in Harrogate this afternoon (Tuesday).

Crews from Harrogate, Knaresborough, Ripon and Tadcaster responded to reports of a blaze in the loft of an apartment in a 4 story building at 1.12pm.

Firefighters put out the loft fire and cut away plaster board and beams to check for hot spots.

They also ventilated the flat.

A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “The fire was believed to be caused by a fire hood of a down light that had been knocked, resulting in a pillow in the loft catching fire and spreading to the loft space.

“The fire resulted in 90% fire damager to the loft, 30% fire  damage to the hallway, and 100% smoke damage to the flat.”
