Last chance to visit popular York restaurant

After three years, York restaurant Clucking Oinks will have its final trading day on Castlegate today (Saturday 30 May).

The fried chicken eatery announced last month it will be closing its Castlegate location, stating that “the idea of a restaurant isn’t a viable one.”

But their hugely popular outlet at Spark York is set to continue, with new things to come too.

In their closing announcement, owners Mike and Rachel Brand said, “This was our first and most likely last foray into a bricks and mortar restaurant.

“It was our dream to open a restaurant and for the most part has been fantastic but unfortunately with the climate and situation of hospitality in the UK the way it is we’ve decided to diversify into a different direction.

“Unfortunately the hospitality industry is fighting a losing battle and we’ve made decisions, exciting decisions to take the business in other directions as it’s become clear the idea of a restaurant isn’t a viable one.”

The fried chicken restaurant will be open today (Saturday) for their final day until they sell out – so get down early for your fried chicken strips, crazy chicken burgers, and giant mozzarella sticks.

Clucking Oinks began as a street food truck before moving into Spark York. The Castlegate restaurant opened in June 2023 and quickly became a favourite, gaining a 4.5/5 rating on TripAdvisor.

During its time, the restaurant had some iconic highs – like the food experiments that resulted in extraordinary creations like the Donutter.

On social media, they encouraged people to pop in for their final day. “Come and see us for one last meal before we move on to our new exciting project.”
