Key North Yorkshire bridge closed all week for repairs

Whitby Swing Bridge will be closed to all vehicles this week.

Engineers are still working to find the technical issues plaguing the bridge.

It has been hit by a series of emergency closures in recent weeks.

We reported at the end of last month that the recent heatwave may have been partly responsible for the problems.

Technicians say the hot weather could have caused the metal to expand in the bridge, which dates from 1908.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said today (Monday): “Whitby Swing Bridge will be closed to all vehicles this week while we continue work to resolve recent issues.

“Pedestrian access will be maintained.

“We will be excavating behind the steel plate to create additional space for the bridge to swing.

“The work is expected to be completed by Friday 10 July; however, we won’t know the full extent of the work until excavation begins.”
