Investigation underway after fire in York suburb

An investigation has been launched after a fire in Acomb early this morning (Monday).

Fire crews were called to reports of a large fire next to Energise Leisure Centre in Cornlands Road, Acomb at 4.52am.

On arrival, Acomb and York firefighters discovered wooden pellets on fire next to a silo at a building with a biomass facility.

They used the aerial ladder platform appliance to extinguish the fire from above alongside a jet from ground level.

A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “A thermal imaging camera was used to check for hotspots to the nearby building which was unaffected by the fire.

“The incident was left in the hands of onsite staff and our fire investigation officer to determine a cause.”

The swimming pool at Energise is closed today but the rest of the leisure centre is open as normal. It is anticipated that the pool will reopen tomorrow.
