Healthy life expectancy in York falls by more than four years

There’s been a large drop in the number of years of good health people in York can expect.

Figures for ‘healthy life expectancy’ have been estimated since 2011.

The latest stats show that figure has dropped on average across the country – with a marked fall for people in York.

Figures show the name of the local authority and the estimated healthy life expectancy at birth in 2022-24; (in brackets) estimated health life expectancy at birth in 2019-21.

The figures have been published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). They show the number of years of good health someone can expect to enjoy if they were born in 2022-24.

York girls born in 2022-2024 are likely to enjoy 61.4 years of good health, down from 66.1 for girls born in 2019-21.

Boys born in 2022-2024 are likely to enjoy 60.8 years of good health, down from 65.1 for boys born in 2019-21.

Nationally the figure is 60.9 for girls (down from 63.4) and 60.7 for boys (down from 62.4).

There’s also been a drop in North Yorkshire, although healthy life expectancy in the county is higher than in York. See the table for the figures.

Greg Ceely, ONS head of population life events, said: “Today’s figures show that, while people in the UK are living longer than at the height of the pandemic, the proportion of their lives spent in good health is still getting smaller.

“Back in 2011, when the ONS first collected this data, men were expected to remain in good health until around the age of 63, and women 64.

“Today, they could both expect around 61 years of healthy life.”

Richmond upon Thames in London had the highest healthy life expectancy for girls born in 2022-24, at 70.3 years.

This is more than 19 years longer than Hartlepool in County Durham, which had the lowest figure at 51.2 years.

For males born in 2022-24, Richmond upon Thames again had the highest figure, at 69.3 years, more than 18 years longer than Blackpool in Lancashire, which had the lowest at just 50.9 years.
