Great rail sale sees thousands of cut-price tickets available from York

This year’s Great British Rail Sale has launched, with a week of cut-price train tickets.

Companies serving York and North Yorkshire, including LNER, TransPennine Express and Northern are selling discounted fares.

All three say there are savings of up to half price in the sale.

LNER

Tickets from York to Edinburgh and London, and all stations in between, are included among the one million discounted tickets.

Tickets are available to book, subject to availability, for travel Monday to Thursday between 13 January and 25 March 2026 inclusive. Tickets must be booked at least seven days in advance of travel.

  • York <> Newcastle standard class – £8.35
  • York <> Newcastle first class – £14
  • York <> London King’s Cross standard – £19.90
  • York <> Edinburgh Waverley standard – £18.65
  • York <> London King’s Cross first class – £43.75
  • York <> Edinburgh Waverley first class – £32.15

TransPennine Express

TPE has cut the price of select Advance Purchase tickets as part of the nationwide Great British Rail Sale.

As well as Advance Purchase tickets, passengers can also take advantage of discounted TPE & Connections tickets, allowing travel on TPE services as well as connecting journeys with other train operators.

Tickets are valid for travel between Sunday, 19 January and Monday, 31 March. Rail Sale tickets must be booked in advance and will not be available to buy on the day of travel.

  • Manchester to York from £7

TPE trains serve Selby, Malton, Thirsk, Northallerton, Scarborough and York as well as destinations including Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Northern

Customers can snap up heavily reduced advance fares for travel between 13 January and 25 March 2026, with many journeys starting or finishing on Northern’s network included in the sale.

Discounted fares will be available through usual ticket-buying channels, including online, via apps, at stations and ticket offices.

Northern stations include Manchester, Newcastle, Leeds, Nottingham, Halifax, Windermere, Knaresborough, Harrogate, Whitby and Filey

Alex Hornby, commercial and customer director for Northern, said: “With millions of discounted tickets available and fares as low as £1 between some of the key northern towns and cities, it’s the perfect time to plan ahead and make the most of what our region has to offer.”
