Friends and family gather to say goodbye to inspirational York hero

It was standing room only at the funeral of Cain North in York today (Wednesday).

Friends and family gathered in large numbers at the York Crematorium for the service.

Cain was an inspiration to many, having raised thousands of pounds for charity while undergoing gruelling operations for a brain tumour.

He died aged 24 on 15 January.

Recognising his extraordinary spirit, Cain was a double winner at the YorkMix Hero Awards in 2023. He won the Outstanding Bravery Award and was then voted by everyone to be the Ultimate Hero.

At today’s service, led by the celebrant Gill Taylor, tributes were paid and memories shared of an amazing but all-too-short life.

Mourners filed in to the song Someone You Loved by Lewis Capaldi. And the exit music was Live Forever by Oasis.

Donations in memory of Cain were collected for St Leonard’s Hospice.

Cain was a keen rugby player and coach. After the service, people gathered at the Acorn Rugby Club where, in the words of his family, they could “continue to share your memories and stories in happier surroundings the way he would want you too”.

His friend Cameron Coates had organised a fundraiser for the funeral, which raised more than £11,000.

One of those donating spoke for many by saying: “Thank you for always being there with your words of wisdom, your listening ears and the kindest soul around. You really are missed.”
