Lane closures and temporary traffic lights are coming to routes near York Station as the upgrade works move to a new phase.
Improvements to the pavements, and the installation of York’s first pedestrian crossing with a countdown timer, are planned over the next few weeks.
It’s the latest stage of the York Station Gateway project, designed to create a pedestrian-friendly gateway to the city.
In recent weeks, new paving, railings and trees have been added along Queen Street.
The pavement on the city walls side of Station Road has also opened up to allow easy access from the bus stops to Blossom Street.
Access to the short stay car park, Blue Badge parking and Tea Room Square is being maintained, through the portico only.
When exiting the area there is no right turn out of Tea Room Square. A diversion is in place via Lendal Gyratory for those travelling towards Blossom Street.
Access for cyclists and pedestrians to and from the station is being maintained.
The changes
Nightworks 16-20 February 9pm-6am
On Monday 16 and Tuesday 17 February, the crossing will be installed. For those nights, taxis will be diverted from the current taxi rank to a temporary rank outside the station.
On the nights between Wednesday 18 and Friday 20 February, there’ll be a lane closure on Queen Street with two-way temporary traffic lights. This is to allow site investigation at the junction with the York Railway Institute (RI). The lane will reopen each morning.
Nightworks 23-27 February 9pm-6am
On Monday 23 February there’ll be minor footpath works at Tea Room Square. Pedestrians will be diverted.
Between Tuesday 24 February and Friday 27 February, cables will laid across the temporary taxi rank. Access to the York RI and NCP car park will remain through the current access road around the back of the RI
Nightworks 2-6 March 9pm-6am
Work to install a duct over the main road will go ahead at nights between Monday 2 March and Friday 6 March.
This will require a lane closure with two-way temporary traffic lights on Queen Street by the York RI junction. Access to the York RI and NCP will be via the York RI junction.
Nightworks from 9-13 March 9pm-6am
More electrical work will see two-way temporary traffic lights outside the station, and a pedestrian diversion.
Two weeks from 16 March (Mon-Fri only)
The footpath outside The Milner York hotel will be closed 24/7 for two weeks to the bottom of the Station Rise/Leeman Road junction.
Pedestrians heading from the city will be required to cross the road at this signalised junction and use the footpath on the opposite side of the road, by the city wall.
They can then cross at a temporary crossing. Pedestrians going the other way will have to do the reverse of this.
