Dangerous drivers ignoring one-way signs in York suburb

Police are to crack down on dangerous driving in a York suburb.

It follows complaints by residents of the Groves about the behaviour of some drivers who are ignoring one-way signs and putting people at risk

“Police are currently addressing road safety concerns raised by residents regarding vehicles travelling the wrong way on the one way streets in The Groves area of York,” said a North Yorkshire Police spokesperson.

“Officers have been carrying out patrols, speaking with drivers, and monitoring compliance to help improve safety for everyone who lives, works, or walks through the area.

“The aim is to reduce dangerous driving, increase awareness of the one way system, and support a safer community environment.”

Officers are asking for residents’ help.

“If you witness ongoing issues or have further concerns, please continue to report them through the appropriate channels so they can be followed up,” the spokesperson added.

“Thank you to local residents for raising these concerns and helping keep The Groves safe.”

The Groves became a low traffic neighbourhood via an experimental order in 2020. This stopped it being used as a through-route.

The order was made permanent in 2022, after councillors heard that traffic has reduced in the area, air quality has improved, cycling has increased, and more community activities have taken place.
