Could you volunteer at North Yorkshire Moors Railway?

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) have announced a New Volunteers Open Day – offering the chance to step behind the scenes, meet the people who make it all happen and discover how you could become part of their railway story.

The volunteers at NYMR help to bring the railway to life every day, from keeping the trains moving, to welcoming visitors and caring for the historic carriages.

The open day for new volunteers will take place at the Learning Centre Classroom on Platform 2 at Pickering Station on Saturday 21 February, from 10am to 2pm.

Complimentary tea and coffee will be available throughout the day.

Attendees will be able to meet volunteers and staff from multiple departments:

  • Booking Offices
  • Tearoom and Shops
  • Lineside
  • Events
  • Estates
  • Operating, including Ticket Inspectors, Guards and Station Staff
  • Engineering

After starting in the Learning Centre, areas including Carriage and Wagon, Customer Services, Booking Office, Tearoom, and Station Shop will have open doors for you to explore.

Throughout the day, there will be opportunities to chat with the Customer Services team and see Booking Office ticketing demonstrations, learn about refreshment preparation in the Tearoom, meet the retail team in the Shop, sit and chat in the Great Western Saloon and discover the behind-the-scenes work of our North Yorkshire Pullman services.

Join Engineering for a tour of the Carriage and Wagon department, speak to Station Staff about a day in the life of operating trains, talk to the Lineside team about fire control and conservation along the railway, and watch an Estates team demonstration showing how the carriages are kept clean.

The open day is open to everyone, including non-working individuals, semi-retired and retired people, and students aged 17 and over.

Pre-registration is encouraged, visit the NYMR website to sign up and find out more.
