Boy, 13, arrested in York after modified mountain bike reaches speeds of 45mph

Police have made an arrest after pursuing a boy on a modified mountain bike at speeds of up to 45mph.

Traffic officers came across a suspicious modified mountain bike while patrolling on Ratcliffe Street in Clifton at 1.15pm yesterday (Wednesday).

They discovered it had been adapted to accelerate using a throttle, not pedals. That means it falls into the category of a motorbike.

The rider refused to pull over and motorcycle police gave chase. The modified bike went faster than they expected.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “It accelerated to speeds of up to 45mph, despite the road being subject to a 30mph speed limit.

“One of the police bikers was able to make a tactical contact with the motorcycle bringing the incident to a quick and safe conclusion.”

A 13-year-old local boy has been arrested on suspicion of driving with no insurance, no licence, failing to stop for police, and for riding with no helmet.

He’s been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

Police described the arrest as a case of “pressure mounting on nuisance riders in York”.
