Blue badge drivers alerted to changes ahead of York Pride’s ‘fantastic celebration’

People are set to celebrate diversity in York during Pride festivities this weekend, a senior councillor has said ahead of changes to Blue Badge parking.

Cllr Katie Lomas, City of York Council’s Labour equalities spokesperson, said the event on Saturday, May 30 would be a moment of solidarity, visibility and joy.

The executive member added it was also an important reminder that important work was still needed to ensure equality for all.

It comes as the council encouraged all residents to join the celebrations taking place in York city centre.

They are set to include a parade which leaves Parliament Street at 12pm, along with live music, a family area and stalls at York Racecourse.

Council representatives are also set to be on hand, along with interactive activities and stands from services including fostering and adoption.

The event is set to see temporary barriers at Blake Street close from 11.50am to 12.45pm to allow the parade to pass.

The barrier at Goodramgate is also set to be closed due to ongoing works in King’s Square.

Blue Badge holders will not be able to park in St Helen’s Square and will only be able to use spaces in Blake Street and Lendal within city centre footstreets during those times.

Parking is still set to be available in Duncombe Place, Piccadilly and at other city centre car parks.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s event, equalities executive member Cllr Lomas said she looked forward to seeing people from across York come together at the weekend.

She said: “York Pride is a fantastic celebration that brings together residents and visitors to recognise and celebrate the diversity of our city.

“We remain committed, as a council, to providing inclusive services and to supporting LGBTQIA+ residents, communities and organisations throughout the year.

“Whether you’re part of the LGBTQIA+ community or an ally, Pride is for everyone.”
