Big supermarket to open in York this week – with freebies up for grabs

York’s newest major supermarket is preparing to welcome its first shoppers.

Lidl will open at Monks Cross at 8am this Thursday, 13 November, after the Lord Mayor cuts the ribbon.

The 16,300 sq ft store is based where the former TK Maxx and Argos buildings used to stand, next to Sainsbury’s.

The multi-million pound investment has created up to 40 jobs, the company says.

On opening day, shoppers can look forward to complimentary food sampling as well as some special prizes up for grabs.

Lidl Monks Cross includes an in-store bakery, popular Middle of Lidl, and customer facilities including toilets with baby-changing stations.

Outside, there will be parking for cars and bicycles as well as seven electric vehicle chargers. Some of the store’s power will also be captured from solar panels on the roof.

Liam Schofield, regional head of property at Lidl GB, said: “For well over a decade, we have been creating Lidl fans across York and are delighted to open our doors to our newest store.

“Today’s announcement is a testament to the growing demand for our affordable and high-quality products, and we’re delighted to open our doors in time for Christmas.

“Thank you to everyone who has played a part in helping to make this store a reality. It’s always an exciting moment when we’re finally able to see our plans come to life and make a difference to local communities.”

The store will be open from 8am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and 10am tp 4pm on Sundays.

Lidl is also encouraging nearby primary schools to join in the new Lidl Foodies Programme. This free scheme provides teachers with resources to help children across the country develop a love for healthy eating.
