Bar and coffee shop planned for former hair salon

A former hair salon in York could be converted into a coffee shop and bar under new plans.

An application lodged with City of York Council would see the former Grant Ashley Hair & Beauty salon, in Poppleton Road, turned into The Carriageworks.

Plans from Cook & Holman Ltd stated coffee and light food would be served during the day while a bar would offer drinks in the evening.

They added it would also sell beer and wine for customers to take away.

The plans would see the coffee shop and bar open from 8.30am to 4.30pm from Monday to Wednesday and until 11pm from Thursday to Saturday.

It would close on Sundays.

No amplified music will be played and there are no plans to put seats outside.

The front of the building, which would be converted into the new venue, has stood vacant since Grant Ashley closed in April 2024.

Plans stated an extension built at the back of the building in 2012 would remain in use by another hair salon business.

A flat on the first floor of the building is above the proposed shop and bar and is out of the application’s scope.

They added the conversion would put the empty space to positive use and bring activity to the corner of a residential street.
