Balaclava-wearing teenager on illegal e-bike arrested after York chase

A 19-year-old man wearing a balaclava has been arrested after police spotted him on what they say was an illegal e-bike.

The rider sparked a chase in the Foxwood area when he was spotted by a police community support officer at about 11am today (Thursday).

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “The rider failed to stop for officers and a short pursuit ensued with officers from our roads policing group.”

He was detained and arrested for failing to stop, driving otherwise in accordance with a license, driving without insurance and dangerous driving.

The spokesperson added: “The male was further arrested for drug driving and for possessing an offensive weapon after a hammer was located following a search of his person.”

He remains in custody. The seized bike will be destroyed.

“It is illegal to use these types of electric bikes on a public road and puts the safety of not only the rider, but pedestrians and other motorists at risk,” the spokesperson added.

“Owners of such bikes should make themselves aware of the laws around their use.”
