‘An unimaginable tragedy’: School pays tribute after death of student in crash

Tadcaster Grammar School has described the death of one of its students in a minibus crash ‘an unimaginable loss’.

It comes as the whole community has been plunged into mourning following the terrible collision at lunchtime yesterday (Monday).

A crash between a minibus carrying nine young people and a car on Toulston Lane near the school caused the death of one teenage girl. Another is in hospital with serious injuries.

In a social media post this afternoon (Tuesday), Tadcaster Grammar said: “We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred yesterday which involved the tragic loss of one of our students.

“Our heartfelt thoughts are with everyone affected by this unimaginable tragedy. We are totally committed to providing every member of our school community with unwavering support and empathy as we come together as one.

“Appropriate support will be available on site tomorrow, with school open to all students and staff.”

The school has been closed all day today.

The name of the student who died still hasn’t been released by police.

Tadcaster counsellor and youth worker Kirsty Poskitt told YorkMix: “I am just devastated and heartbroken for the girl’s family.

“It is an unimaginable loss, and I am deeply sorry to them and their wider family. I speak with three hats on. I’m obviously the North Yorkshire member for Tadcaster, but first and foremost, I’m a youth worker, and I’m a mum in this community, and what has happened yesterday is devastating on all counts.

“We will do everything that we can do to support the wider community, but the young people in our community that will be feeling this so so deeply.”
