YouTube sensation iBallisticSquid brought his video camera to York a few days ago, introducing thousands of his subscribers to our city’s ancient charms.
Not heard of iBallisticSquid? If not, where have you been? Known as Squid for short, his real name is David Spencer, he lives in Huddersfield and he has getting close to two million subscribers on his main YouTube channel.
To any young person into Minecraft, Squid is a superstar. Along with his mate and fellow YouTuber Stampylonghead, aka Stampy, they are heroes in the eyes of young gamers in their millions.
Their Minecraft “let’s play” videos are followed religiously by fans, and garner thousands of comments and discussions.
Old, new and nice
Recently Squid left behind his console and took a day trip to York.
This caused ecstasy among the fans commenting on YouTube:

He begins his vlog in his Cedar Court Grand hotel suite which delights Squid and his girlfriend Nicole. “It’s the craziest hotel I’ve ever stayed in,” he says. “It’s insane!”
First stop on the itinerary is Clifford’s Tower, where he contrasts the old buildings of the Eye of York with the new cars in the Castle car park.
Next is York Minster, which Squid’s girlfriend says is nice, and finish with a tour of the Bar Walls, before catching the train home and going for a shopping trip to The Range.
With nearly 68,000 views and counting this is a great seven minutes’ of free promotion for York (and the Cedar Court Grand).
