A new restaurant will open in the historic Cumberland House tomorrow.
It was revealed last year that the Grade I-listed 18th century building on the corner of Cumberland Street and King’s Staith was set for a new lease of life – after a licensing application to turn it into a restaurant was lodged by Shaun and Jamie-Leigh Binns.
Now the opening day is nearly here, as new restaurant The Cumberland will open its doors tomorrow, Friday 27 March.

Shaun and Jamie-Leigh also run Lil’s Bar and Bistro, The Waterfront, and The Lowther next door.
Overlooking the River Ouse, The Cumberland will be helmed by head chef James Whitlock who will “bring together the best of seasonal British produce with innovation and classic technique”.
There will be several different menus available at The Cumberland: a lunch and light bites menu, a la carte, and Sunday lunch menu. Highlight dishes for the opening menu include a trout and nori mosaic (£12), 10z rib eye steak (£32), carrot tarte tatin (£22), and lemon verbena cotta (£12).
Sunday lunch will be served every week from 12pm to 5pm at £21, or £29 for two courses and £34 for three courses.
Alongside the food menu, will be a “curated wine list and expertly crafted cocktails”.

Ahead of the opening tomorrow, the restaurant has been sharing progress pictures of the transformation, including new wallpaper, light furnishings, and decor. Take a look in our gallery below.
The building, which dates back to around 1710, went on the market in 2023 when it was expected to attract offers of more than £1m.
North Yorkshire-based property developers the Helmsley Group sold the four-storey Georgian mansion in 2024.
Cumberland House was originally built for William Cornwall, who served as York’s sheriff and lord mayor, according to its Historic England list entry.
It was christened Cumberland House in 1746 when Prince William, the Duke of Cumberland, is believed to have stayed there after winning the Battle of Culloden.
The Cumberland will be open every day from 12pm to 10pm (11pm on Saturdays and 9pm on Sundays).
