New café and bar could be coming to York’s Coney Street

A new café and bar could be coming to a major York street under plans lodged with the council.

Federal Café Ltd has applied to licence 5 Coney Street for alcohol sales from 8am to 11pm daily.

The company stated on its website it had grown across the UK after opening its first café in Manchester’s Northern Quarter in 2014.

The plans come as the building, which housed Lush until 2024, is set to be developed as part of the wider regeneration of Coney Street.

Plans from developers Helmsley Group would see 5 Coney Street partially demolished to create a new ‘snickleway’ providing access to an existing rear courtyard.

Work on the scheme, which also includes a new public space overlooking the River Ouse, began in June with scaffolding going up in the street.

The redevelopment is also set to include retail and leisure spaces along the new Waterloo Place waterfront area and the upper floors of buildings converted to house 358 student bedrooms.

Federal Café’s website stated its founder Claudio Alves Ribeiro was inspired to open the first Manchester site after a trip to Melbourne, Australia.

It stated: “We opened a small café in the Northern Quarter and focused on doing the basics properly- good coffee, good food, look after people.

“Over time it grew, people came back, they told their friends, the cafés got busier and the energy built.

“Today Federal has grown across the UK built on the same thinking from day one.”

Federal now has three cafés in Manchester along with a coffee cart at Altrincham, in Trafford.

They also run a site in Boar Lane, Leeds.

The licensing application is open to public comments until Monday, August 3.
