It appears to be a pretty stressful position being Mayor of Ripon.
Just weeks after one resigned after calls for a vote of no confidence, the woman who replaced her now faces one herself.
A parish meeting is planned to move forward with an attempt to get Barbara Brodigan to step down from the role. It follows a turbulent time in local politics in the city which saw the departure of a leader, deputy leader, mayor, deputy mayor and chief officer.
Monday 3 November is the date for the meeting at Ripon’s Holy Trinity Church at 6:30pm.
Not legally binding
Sandra Craven, who handed in the motion for the Parish Meeting, said,
“We felt that the Parish Meeting was necessary because we wanted to give the residents of Ripon a voice. Residents who have been ignored and dismissed.
“We wanted to remind councillors that they were elected by the people of Ripon and that their actions should be for the benefit of the city, not for themselves.
“We are aware that the result of this poll won’t be legally binding, but we can’t understand why Cllr Brodigan would want to continue in the role as being one of, if not the only, Mayor of Ripon to have a public vote of no confidence.
“That would be a historic record to avoid.
“This is an opportunity for Cllr Brodigan to listen to the public strength of feeling and to pause and reflect how this political instability is causing division in the city of Ripon and how this might affect its future and relationship with North Yorkshire (Council).”
