A community bar has reopened today (Friday) – after a huge refurbishment.
The Angel On The Green on Bishopthorpe Road shut on New Year’s Day to carry out the work, and now its reopened its doors after a major refurb.
The main aim of the transformation is to create more room for pubgoers, and YorkMix spoke to general manager Bella Brunton to find out more.
“We’ve been slowly working on this process to become more of a community bar,” explained Bella. “We’ve always had more of a pub feel, and the business has been going for ten years, so it’s changed a lot.
“We worked a lot to decide that it’s going to be more of a community bar supporting the locals around the area – from musicians to artists, DJs, all kinds of stuff. This is the final transformation from that.”

Visitors to the Angel on the Green can expect beer from independent breweries, classic cocktails, a new brunch menu and a much bigger space.
“The bar before was absolutely tiny – you could only fit about one and a half people behind it. It will be great for us, because it gives us the opportunity to show people what we can do.”
The reaction during the refurb has been positive from regulars and passers by.
“We’ve had quite a big build up on our social media, and the reaction has all been very positive. We didn’t want to change the essence of the place and that was what quite a lot of people were worried about.”
The bar also has lots of community events planned, like art exhibitions, supper clubs, independent film screenings and live music.”

The bar will still be serving up pizza from Rad Pizza, as well as new brunch dishes like caramalised onion and goats cheese flatbread toast, banana breads, and sweet drinks.
“We try and do a bit of everything really well here. W’re all about quality, whether that’s in our beer, how we make our coffee or how we make our cocktails, and even just how we curate our environment.
“We try and make everything is done with purpose and with care to try and make your experience when you walk in the door as nice as it possibly can be. I think that’s really important.”
