Firefighters called to fires in York, Selby, Malton and Pickering overnight

It has been a particularly busy night for the North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service.

They were called to fires across the county last night (Friday) and early this morning.

Several were started deliberately Here are some of their main callouts.



6.56pm – Westgate Carr Road, Pickering

Crews from Pickering and Malton put out a skip fire close to commercial premises. The cause is believed deliberate.

7.15pm – Cliffe, Selby

Crews from Selby responded to reports of a fire in the open. They found a small campfire left unattended and extinguished using one hose reel jet. The cause was deliberate.

7.34pm – Bilbrough

Crews from Acomb and York responded to a combine harvester on fire in a field. The fire was extinguished using one hose reel jet. The cause was believed to have been an accumulation of crop material underneath the vehicle. It resulted in a small area of fire damage.

7.38pm – Stoneybrough Lane, Thirsk

Crews from Thirsk and Northallerton responded to reports of smoke coming from a barn. Crews found a small fire inside a derelict building and extinguished using a bucket of water. The cause was deliberate with youths seen running from the area.

8.47pm – Parkland Drive, Tadcaster

Crews from Knaresborough on standby in Tadcaster used small tools to release a teenage girl trapped in a child’s swing.

8.57pm – Elston Avenue, Selby

Crews from Selby responded to reports of a tumble dryer on fire inside a home. Crews removed the appliance from the property and out out the fire using one hose reel jet. Positive pressure ventilation removed light smoke logging from the premises. The cause was the appliance overheating.

11.21pm – Ashton Avenue, York

Acomb firefighters responded to reports of a small fire in a play park. The fire was extinguished using one backpack sprayer. The cause was deliberate.

12.20am – Four Lane Ends, Westow, Malton

Malton firefighters responded to multiple reports of a car fire well alight in a lay-by. They put out the fire using one hose reel jet and foam. The cause is believed deliberate and the police were informed.
