Visitors have been flocking to one of North Yorkshire’s most spectacular summer floral displays in Sessay near Thirsk. The Wildflower Meadow at Spilmans features cornflowers, poppies, corn chamomile, red campion and white campion for visitors to pick, cut and take home until the end of August. Tom Spilman, owner of family-run Spilmans, says: “We’ve had a brilliant start to the season with visitors really enjoying the beautiful meadow here at Church Farm.” Over 50,000 seeds were sown last autumn with early, mid and late varieties planted to ensure a continual wave of colour throughout July and August. The five acre site is adjacent to the strawberry fields and provides the perfect backdrop for photographers and content creators looking to capture that special social media moment over the summer. Tom adds: “The rich multi colours of the blooms against the bright blue summer skies are a stunning background for some Instagrammable pics. We’ve had lots of families and couples visiting who’ve captured some great photos in the meadow.” The Wildflower Meadow also acts as a vital haven for local pollinators, bursting with bees, butterflies, and wildlife. "We wanted to create an experience that brings people closer to nature while giving something back to our local ecosystem," added Tom. "There is something incredibly therapeutic about walking through the blooms and choosing your own unique bunch of flowers. It’s a wonderful way to slow down and enjoy the British summer." The 100 acre farm also offers soft fruit picking including strawberries, raspberries and blackberries while the nature trail gives little ones the chance to spot clues and answer questions around the working fruit fields. Hungry guests can head to the Stone Barn Café which serves brunches, lunch, wood fired pizzas and hot and cold drinks. In addition to a blooming programme of rural entertainment there is also plenty of weather-proof fun at Spilmans in the indoor play barn featuring pedal tractors, ball pit and sand area, while outside there is the outdoor adventure play and bouncing pillows. Tickets to the Wildflower Meadow are included with entry to the strawberry fields and open Wednesday - Sunday until the end of August. Prices start at £2.50 for individual prebooked tickets online with discounts for families and groups. Pre-booking is advised, but not essential, as walk-up admissions can’t always be admitted if the farm is full. Ticket costs are reimbursed for every £5.00 per person spent on fruit.
