‘Brilliant’ York fish and chip shop named the best in Britain

York has the best fish and chip shop in the country.

In the chippie Oscars last night (Wednesday), The Scrap Box was named the Fish And Chip Takeaway Of The Year.

And it wasn’t the only York and North Yorkshire success on the night… See below.

The National Fish And Chip Awards, organised by the National Federation of Fish Friers, were held at the Park Plaza in London.

The Scrap Box, found on the A1079 at Dunnington, was the last award winner of the night. It had previously been named in the top ten chippies shortlisted for the award last year, alongside Mister C’s in Selby and The Fish Bank in Sherburn-in-Elmet.

On receiving the top prize of Takeaway of the Year, Aman Dhesi who co-owns The Scrap Box with his brother Gavin, says: “There are so many outstanding fish and chip shops across the UK, and countless awards, but this is the one every chippy dreams of, the ‘Oscars’ of our industry!

“With the most rigorous judging and the highest calibre of past winners, it’s a true honour to be recognised at this level.

“To represent the very best of fish and chips for the year ahead is both humbling and hugely meaningful to our team, and a testament to the craft, care, and consistency we put into every portion of fish and chips.”

Last year the business became a National Fish and Chip Quality Award Champion and it was also named as one of the Happiest Places To Work in hospitality.

But this one’s the biggest honour in frying. York Outer MP Luke Charters was among the first to congratulate the team. “I am absolutely thrilled to say that we officially have the BEST fish and chip takeaway in the entire country right here in York Outer!,” he said.

“Gavin and Aman, the brilliant minds behind this incredible business, were in London for the awards and very kindly stopped by Parliament for a catch-up.

“They’re also fellow Huntington School alumni like me, and it’s great to see them doing so well!

“The Scrap Box isn’t just a brilliant local business; it’s a cornerstone of our community here in York Outer. If you haven’t visited yet, you absolutely should. Go and show them some love, they are officially the best takeaway in the country!”

Last night The Scrap Box also took the Marketing Initiative of the Year.

Another big winner was Trenchers of Whitby which won Fish And Chip Restaurant of the Year.

The Trenchers team declared themselves ‘over the moon’, adding: “We’re so grateful for the continued support of our amazing customers – you have helped us achieve this, and we promise to keep serving award-winning fish and chips every time you visit.

“And a huge congratulations to our incredible team – a truly well-deserved achievement!”

David Miller, of Millers Fish And Chips in Haxby, was honoured with the Outstanding Contribution award.

And Abigail Barker from Millers was runner-up in the Young Fish Frier Of The Year.

Congrats to all!
