A new guide to York for families who have additional needs has just been published.
Accessible York For Families is a comprehensive and free online guide for families with accessibility, autism-friendly, sensory-friendly or audio-described needs.
It has been put together by York Mumbler. Working with local charities, attractions and businesses the guide brings together as much information as the team could find to help families with accessibility or additional support needs in York.
York Mumbler founder Emily Pickard said: “It’s something we have been really passionate about, to ensure that we can be as inclusive and comprehensive as possible to all families.
“We’ve always tried to cover events, attractions and activities that do particularly well for children and families with additional needs, but we’ve recently put a real concerted effort into bringing this into one place and making it even easier to find the information that families need.
“There are so many places in the city that are inclusive and welcoming to everyone so we wanted to make it easier for you to find them all.
“We’d love to encourage businesses to get in touch if you think you have something to offer.”
The guide covers accessible events and activities in the school holidays, as well as accessible places in York to visit.
There are also weekly groups and classes, and local support groups.
The guide also covers:
- Access for wheelchair/mobility scooters and options to borrow one.
- Quiet sessions and sensory packs to use
- Guide/assistance animals allowed
- Reduced price or free entrance for carers
- British Sign Language Interpreted, audio described or captioned information
- Accessible toilets
- Accessible car parking for blue badge holders.
This half term you can discover family events and places that are accessible, autism-friendly, sensory-friendly or audio-described across York in the Accessible York For Families guide.
